About

I drink wines sometimes, am a very amateur taster, and I like researching and writing about wines. I’m also on instagram at @burpthatsgoodwine.

Wine-scoring

Never really understood most ratings. For me, the most intuitive way was to simply anchor a 4.0 around a simple question: is the wine was so good and enjoyable that I am compelled to buy it again with my own money? Every other tier is quite frankly arbitrary, and just constructed around how I generally perceive wines.

I ended up adding a Value component/modifier to the scores in late 2024. This came about as I clocked a fair bit of mileage across regions and price ranges – it became clear to me what exceptional looks like in each price bracket. On the flip side, it was also evident that while some wines were objectively very good, similar quality could be had for considerably lower prices. This is especially case in the Singapore domestic market, where certain regions (Burgundy, Napa) and labels (eg Opus Overture) were especially inflated. This pricing effect has often times led me to avoid purchasing the specific wine again. As such, the (V) modifier serves as a useful tool for me to acknowledge the objective quality of a wine, while providing an indication of its value respective to either other wines of similar quality or price.
