God. Damn. This was so so good.
Cracking open an old ‘decanted’ Pepe is such a pleasure.

In the glass: deep dark garnet, that spreads out to a wide band of bright orange gamet. A sign of its age.
On the nose: the first thing that stood out to me were the signature Pepe funk, and a certain smoky note. Interesting… then came a deep blackberry, a licorice lift at the top, and this savory herb tone. Super super complex and aromatic. Deep. Intense.
On the palate: this wine is ALIVE. Resolved tannins, bright acidity. Mid body, but palate coating. Mid++ intensity. More dark cherries and blackberries.
This was deeeelicious. The 2000 was very familiar to me, although that tinge of smokiness came as a little bit of a surprise. This has entered its prime drinking window, and I can imagine this loitering in that zone for a good 5-10 years at the min given the sheer intensity of fruit and acidity
