At home with the Raffles block. Ch Beychevelle caught my attention recently because I learnt about their reconstruction of their new winery. Apparently the quality of the wines have been elevated so much to the extent that they can often beat even the best of the third growths. Unfortunately I didn’t quite do the right research, and realized too late that only vintages 2016 and later benefited from the new winery. Goddammit. In any case, almost equal parts Cab Sauv and Merlot, although the winemaker is trying to increase their cab Sauv % in recent years. Dark fruits. Black current. Chocolate. Candidly, very unimpressive until deep into decanting (1.5 – 2hours). Mid bodied, mid levels of alcohol I think. Pencil shaving on the nose at exhale. Enjoyed it, but wasn’t impressed.
