With Hart, Daniel in Jakarta. Kenny loooooooves Barolos.
Fresh off the bottle, promising daaaark red fruit powerful perfume. A touch tight, but very promising. Medium on the body, bright red, and age has given it some orange as is typical with a barolo of this age.
The nose opened up with 50-90 mins of aeration, but something odd happened. A tinge of strawberry emerged, oooh very exciting. I love strawberry notes in Barolos!! But then it basically pulled a Pontet 2012 – the fruits soon disappeared, and it was just pure leather and oak. wtf happened to the perfume?
That said, this was the perfect example of how nicely Barolo tannins age. Structured (with room to round off) but smooth.
Look. This was objectively a decently good wine. Very highly rated too. But what’s the point of drinking a Barolo if all I’m gonna get is pure leather and oak. Bummer.
I consider wines >4.0 if I would order it again, and while this is probably a good wine, I would certainly not buy one again.
