I continue my exploration of Trebbiano. More specifically, I’m just trying to find a half reasonably priced one that comes close-ish to a Valentini, Emidio Pepe, or Tiberio’s Fonte Canale. (If anyone has a somm friend who knows of such wine, PLS let me know).

Unfortunately, this was not it. We did drink it over 5 – 6 hours, and this wine had the most interesting transformation.

In the glass: this was a rich golden color, reminding me of a sweet dessert wine.
On the nose: this was actually an extremely complex mix of mild honey, mild apple, vanilla, and some sorta flower that I just, well, dont have the vocab for.
On the palate: this was extremely extremely bone dry, with just mid acidity, and what i would describe as a short curt finish.
I’m not sure why, but i really didn’t enjoy the wine at that point. While the nose was incredibly intensely aromatic and complex, it might’ve come across as just too sweet? Perhaps it was the jarring disconnect between the sweet nose and the bone dry palette (although I’ve enjoyed others that were like that). Honestly, it could’ve just been because I was disappointed this wasn’t what I was looking for.

Interestingly, as the wine breathed generously (5-6 hours), this deepened the nose considerably, and it honestly smelled like pure apple cider mixed with caramelized pineapples. Super interesting. But at THAT point i knew why I didn’t like it. I didn’t want a wine that tastes like apple cider.
