At Ben Fatto with large EDB group.

I’m SO bummed about this. I’d gone to great lengths to hunt for this wine, after tasting the delicious 2019 at NYE dinner. So I was grabbed a whole case when I finally found the wine (albeit the 2021).

Unfortunately for me, this 2021 isn’t quite the 2019.

In the glass: rich ruby with distinct garnet hue. Mid- body.

On the nose: mainly strawberries, touch of rose. Nose was super primary and pure. A touch of earthiness.

On the palate: this wine needs a fair bit of air. Fresh off the bottle, this was thin, sorta astringent. Unpleasant. I was SO disappointed. But thankfully with time, the body somehow intensified and became a touch dense. Grippy tannins. High acidity. Mid— body. Alcohol was a little obtrusive despite being only 13.5%.

I have to say, with enough air, it’s still a fairly enjoyable wine, with the right notes and body for the menu. BUT.

Alas, this was not the beautiful rich Il Pettirosso I drank at NYE. Perhaps this is just a touch too young. Sigh. In any case, not touching the remainder for a few good years and we will see how it turns out.
