With the wine hoes.

After a few tries, I’ve discovered that Rauzan Seglas fit my palate suuuuuper well. The last one I tried was a 2003, which was truly delicious. The 2019 was the best performer amongst the 2019s tonight.

In the glass: deep dark rich ruby with a tinge of purple. Not quite inky. Mid++ body with glass-staining legs.

On the nose: even with 3 hours in the decanter, the wine had an initial whiff of pleasant funk that dissipated in the glass. Blackcurrant, blackberries, rich cherries. The nose was intensely aromatic, and sweet. Slight notes of glycerin. A certain tinge of earthiness and herbal notes.

On the palate: this is not nearly as powerful as the GPL, but it was still concentrated, rich, deep. A noticeable touch of residual sugar that was coherent with the nose. Noticeably higher alcohol on the palate and exhale, despite the same 14.5% abv. Long and palate coating. Rich but mild vanilla on the exhale. This was the most tannic of the 3 2019s.

Both the GPL and Rauzan Segla were just aaabsolute babies wines that were naturally very primary. GPL stood out to me for its exceptionally well integrated alcohol (which says a lot given I have a meek palate and am very sensitive to it). The Rauzan Segla etched ahead for me for its slightly more complex nose, and that certain elegance instead of the GPL’s raw power.
