With Hart, YZ, Sloke, Liz, Malone and PT at the charming Nicolas.

I had a few considerations and hidden agenda. For one, I’ve been trying to learn more about cote-rotie and figure out what all the fuss is about. I also wanted smth with a touch of spice, lift and intensity for the main course, before we get to the Bordeaux. This was it.

In the glass: deep dark inky purple.

On the nose: I expected some sorta savory animalistic funk (more because of my ignorance than anything) but this was not it. Instead, this was an INTENSE blackberry, a splash of blueberries, dried perfumed flowers, a giant dollop of white pepper, and a distinct earthiness.

On the palate: very high intensity of primary fruits. Mid acidity. Grippy tannins but very very palatable. Alcohol was slightly elevated but I have to say is very well integrated. Long finish.

I feel like… this is still way too young? It’s so intensely primary, and the tannins could benefit from just being a touch more rounded. But what a deliciously intense nose.
