At the Ohana Christmas lunch.
Brandon was the first person to introduce me to the magic of Vouvrays – it was with various old vintages of Domaine Huet’s drop dead delicious Le Mont vouvrays.
In any case, the Clos Naudin vouvray sec is delicious, and can often be found on sale for about $60. Banger.
In the glass, it’s a paleish bright yellow. Bright aromatic nose of lemon zest, green apple.
On the palate: it’s the bright crispy acidity and mouthfeel you would expect with most decently good vouvrays. The other thing: while the “Sec” is supposed to be the driest version of the wine (vs Demi-sec or moelleux), I find that almost all Sec retains a tiny tiny touch of sugar across almost all producers. And I like that – while Demi-secs can be delicious with food, I find them too cloying when drinking alone even with the high acidity.
The one thing that I found lacking was that unlike the good ole Le Monts, this particularly bottle didn’t quite have that tight stony minerality that I love. For the money, the Clos Naudin is an excellent and damn delicious wine. As a matter of fact, this is almost always the one I grab when I’m just trying to hit min spend for free shipping. That said, I would almost always recommend dropping the extra coin for the Le Mont.
