With Hart at home.
YUM. Little Friday night treat for us, after being wine-less for weeeeeks. Ended up drinking wine, eating chips and chocolate, and watching One Punch Man. I don’t think there’s anyone in the world I like spending time with as much as that woman. Truly.
Anyway. Hart previously tried the Masi amarone and really liked it.
In the glass: rich dark ruby (ignore the garnet hue in the photo). Dense core, but surprisingly more translucent than I would’ve expected around the rim.
Fresh off the bottle: big waft of chocolate. Distinct alcohol, but surprisingly not as jarring as you would expect for a 15%. Also distinct funk. Plums. And oddly enough, a sweet cherry and glycerin. Surprisingly, no notes of raisin – I like that in an amarone.
As the wine breathed, notes of tobacco/cigar. This wine is quite beautiful without much air, with the classic notes that’s very very fruit forward. But! With about 1.5 hrs in the decanter, yum. The giant round fruit balanced out, and the tobacco and earthy savoriness really came forward. It was nice.
On the palate: still dry, but there’s certainly a fair bit of residual sugar that fits well with the nose. Wine was medium bodied, mid acidity. Surprisingly very very well integrated alcohol. Quite lush and palate coating.
On the exhale: ah, that hint of raisin. There it is.
Overall, definitely one of the amarones out there that I consistently enjoy a lot. It’s not this BIG flabby cloying sweet overly alcoholic wine that a lot of poorly made amarone tends to be. Reasonably priced too!
