This was one of the Fullerton wines that James and I grabbed for ourselves earlier. I’d selected this over a Brunello, because I thought this made a more pleasant transition from the Fleurie.

In the glass: a rich deep ruby. Clear. Mid- body.

On the nose: ah, the difference from the Tenebris is immediately obvious. The Tenebris was this hyper complex and wild nose; the Claudius is a much simpler classic Pinot noir – straight rich cherries and dark plums. Very very faint wisp of Christmas spices at the exhale. Very pretty wine.

On the palate: a mid body with a certain richness on the palate. The fruits come across darker here. The one thing that’s consistent across both the Claudius and the Tenebris is that they both lack a certain brightness to the acidity, and as a consequence comes across a little soft and needs to be serve much colder to get some liveliness on the palate. HM.

For >$150, you’re getting in the territory of some very very decent and compelling 1er cru burgs with a much more complete package, especially on the palate. The Tenebris would still come out ahead with that insane nose, but man, idk about the value proposition of this bottling.
