I continued to be super charmed by San Leonardo.

In the glass: a deeeep inky garnet that transitions into a bright bricking at the rim.

On the nose: a very distinct VA. Cherries. Ripe plums, almost dried. Distinct notes of earthiness and mushroom. Touch herbal. Sweet. This almost smells like an old Brunello if tasted blind.

On the palate: what a magical palate. It’s just so fresh/bright, it almost comes across a little minty. This might just be my consistent favorite about this wine. A beaaaaautifully integrated 13% alcohol, with fully resolved tannins. So juicy. Long finish.

I would say I loved the 2006 more. The age on this bottle has pushed the VA up a touch much, and brought the taste profile a little more into the dried fruit territory. The 2006 was just this perfect balance of age, and fresh fruits – seems like ~20 years of age is my sweet spot for the winemaker. But of course at this point I’m just nitpicking. Damn good wine.
