With Hart, YZ, Sloke at the @thewinemonk tasting.

I don’t think I’ve ever come across a pure Carmenere before; in fact I’ve never heard of anyone doing a single varietal bottling of the grape anywhere. Apparently the estate had always thought they were planting cab franc, only to discover from genetic testing that their vines were in fact Carmenere! (I don’t know if this was the official story)

In the glass: mid body, bright ruby, tinge of garnet at the rim.

On the nose: you can see why it was mistaken as a cab franc. Blackberries, cherries, and that very very distinct earthiness. Distinct touch of sweet oak – aromatic, balanced.

On the palate: grippy tannins, mid- body and fresh. Elegant.
